Install and use the Picsart Sketch plugin

Updated

The Picsart Sketch plugin provides background removal, upscaling, API-key management and credit checking for selected image layers. Use the official repository and a version compatible with your Sketch installation.

Check requirements

You need Sketch on macOS, internet access and a Picsart API account with credits. Building from source also requires Node.js and npm.

The legacy guide listed macOS 12+, Sketch 71+ and Node.js 14+. The repository contains differing metadata and a prebuild script that is not a reliable full compatibility check. Treat those old minimums as historical, not proof of support for every later version. Use a maintained Node.js version compatible with the build dependencies and consult the chosen release’s requirements.

Obtain and build the plugin

For a packaged release, follow its installation instructions. For the source checkout, the repository’s package scripts provide the build process:

git clone https://github.com/PicsArt/picsart-sketch-plugin
cd picsart-sketch-plugin
npm ci
npm run build

npm ci installs the locked dependencies and runs the repository’s post-install script, which builds and links the plugin. The explicit build command rebuilds it. Review the terminal output; these commands have been checked against the package scripts, not run as an installation test here.

The configured bundle is picsart-plugin.sketchplugin. If it is not linked automatically, use Sketch’s Plugins → Manage Plugins → Open Plugins Folder workflow to install the built bundle according to the selected release. Restart Sketch and confirm the Picsart commands appear.

Set your API key

  1. Use the key from the intended Picsart account.
  2. In Sketch, open Plugins → Picsart plugin → Set API Key (labels may vary by release).
  3. Enter the key in the plugin settings and keep it out of shared documents and screenshots.

Edit an image

  • Remove background: select an image layer, then use the plugin’s removeBG / Remove Background command. Inspect the resulting layer and edges.
  • Upscale: select the image layer and use Upscale / Upscale Image. Choose only settings offered by that release and inspect the output dimensions and detail.
  • Check Credit Balance / Check Credits: view the connected API account’s balance.
  • Log Out: clear the key stored by the plugin when you need to disconnect or change accounts.
  • Help: if available in your release, open the plugin’s help command; the repository remains the installation reference.

Keep the original layer separately. Do not assume background replacement, every upscale factor or lossless visual quality is available simply because an older guide described it.

Troubleshooting

If the plugin does not appear, inspect build output and installation location, then restart Sketch. For API errors, check the key, available credits, supported input and selected image layer. Send support the Sketch/plugin versions and a redacted error message.
